The diet of the Orange-Bellied Parrots consists mainly of seeds of sedges and plants, and also button grass.
Other seeds that they feed on are found in sedge lands that have not been burned between 3 - 15 years, and the seeds of the Boronia species and the daisy, Helichrysum pumilum.
At King Island and back to the main land, the parrots feed on salt-tolerant species of plant, such as sea rocket and types of coastal grasses.
They have also been found eating decaying kelp and sea weeds around coasts and lakes.
